Spider
Veins on the legs are a very common
problem that affects over half the population. The
reason for the onset of varicose and spider veins is
still unknown, but certain factors, such as heredity,
seem to play a decisive role.
When the valves in a vein become damaged, they
are unable to function properly and reflux can
occur causing varicose and spider veins. |

|
The condition can be aggravated by
pregnancy, menopause, obesity, aging of
body tissue, and the use of birth control pills and other hormone therapy. At one
time, there was no alternative to surgery in the treatment of varicose and spider
veins. However, since the 1920's, a non-surgical procedure called sclerotherapy
has been in used in Europe.

During
sclerotherapy a sclerosing
solution (usually concentrated saline) is
injected into the diseased, dilated vein.
This injection causes a reaction in the
wall of the vein and sclerosis, or
hardening of the vein results. This
prevents blood from flowing through the
treated vein. |
Blood is re-routed naturally through
the healthy superficial and deep venous
systems, and eventually the treated veins disappear.
When properly performed, sclerotherapy is effective in safely treating some large
varicose veins and most smaller spider veins.
A consultation to assess the functionality of your veins is needed before
treatment. Dr Sellers, a Family Physician specialized in phlebology (the study of
veins) performs the initial consultation; this consultation is covered through OHIP.
A referral from your GP is not necessary. Dr. Sellers or the clinic's Registered
Nurse performs the treatment. Each sclerotherapy session is $85.00 for 20
minutes of injections. Usually 30 or more injections can be preformed during
these treatments. Most people tolerate the treatment with minimal discomfort
because the needles used are very small.
Due to the nature of the venous system, veins may sometimes have to be
injected more than once before they become less apparent. Larger reticular veins
that "feed" the smaller spider veins need to be treated first. You can expect an
approximate 75 percent improvement in the appearance of leg veins after several
treatments. Full results may not be apparent for approximately 3 months.
As with any medical procedure, certain side effects are possible. This will be
discussed during your initial consultation. Fortunately, when trained, experienced
medical professionals administer sclerotherapy, serious complications rarely
arise. You may experience some redness and bruising following each treatment.
You may also experience an aching feeling in your legs for the first day or two
following treatment. A light walk is recommended after each session to soothe
any discomfort you feel. Avoiding vigorous workouts for 48-72 hours following
each treatment allows the veins to heal.
For the best possible result, we highly recommend using support stockings after
your sclerotherapy treatments. During your consultation we will measure you for
custom-made support stockings. These stockings are unlike most medical
support stockings; they come in a variety of colors and styles. Most medical
support stockings are covered through extended Health Insurance plans.
